Do’s & Don’ts For Diabetics

Every so often something really special happens here at North Lakeland Foot Clinic.

Let me tell you a story of a patient we’ll call Mary. A long term diabetic, I’ve watched this beautiful lady lose most of her toes to this disease.

My diabetic friends, and friends who know diabetics are always asking me for a list of DO’s and DON’Ts for care of the feet. Since sixteen million Americans have diabetes and 25% will develop foot related problems, you might want to save this column or give it to someone you love.

  1. Keep your blood sugar level under control.
  2. Inspect your feet daily for blisters, sores, corns, or calluses. Use a mirror or a helper to check the places you can’t see.
  3. Inspect the inside of your shoes daily for foreign objects or rough spots you can not feel because of numbness. (“I found a shot glass in a patient’s shoe once!”)
  4. Have your shoes fitted by a specialist. Ask your foot doctor if you are eligible for the medicare diabetic shoe and insole program.
  5. See you doctor regularly to have your feet examined.

  1. Do not smoke.
  2. Do not walk on hot surfaces. Especially this time of year in Florida you should avoid hot sand or cement around pools.
  3. Do not use chemical agents for the removal of corns or calluses.
  4. Do not wear sandals with thongs between the toes.
  5. Do not cut corns or calluses or abnormal toe nails. See your podiatric physician.
