My Shoes Are Too Tight

“Doctor, all of a sudden my shoes are too tight! I thought it was just a long day on my feet, but that was a week ago and my feet are still swollen.” This could be edema. Common factor such as sitting or standing to long, hot weather, too much salt, or hormone fluctuations all can cause swelling. Sometimes edema may be a sign of more severe medical conditions. Blood clots are especially suspected if swelling occurs in only one foot accompanied by shortness of breath. Damaged kidneys result in swelling through the body. Even tumors, thyroid disease, and various medications can cause edema. Seek prompt medical care if leg swelling is sudden, painful, in only one leg, or is accompanied by warmth inflamation, fever, shortness of breath, or chest pain. Edema itself can be treated with salt restriction, diuretic drugs, exercise, elevation, and compressive stockings. At North Lakeland Foot Clinic, we also have proven physical therapy techniques that can resolve edema quickly and safely. No matter the cause, it’s best not to let the swelling go unchecked. Visit our office behind the big Twistee Treat ice cream cone at 4973 US Hwy 98 N. North Lakeland Foot Clinic is open 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Thursday.
